Natural Wool is Naturally Fire Resistant

wool

Traditional manufacturers spray their bedding products with fire retardant chemicals to make them fire resistant. These chemicals are linked to cancer and a number of long-term health risks. Why is this so widely tolerated?

Most of us are not confronted with our health problems until it’s too late, so it’s important to take the necessary precautions. Just as exercise and a proper diet are a daily necessity for good health, so is avoiding regular exposure to harmful substances in the home.

Wool is a naturally fire resistant material for a number of reasons. It has high moisture and nitrogen content, as well as a high oxygen index at about 26%. Wool has a high ignition threshold of 1100ºF or 600ºC, and low heat of combustion and release. If ignited, the material would form a self-insulating char that prevents fire propagation by not melting or dripping.

In addition to being safe, wool is a miracle material for bedding.
  • Regulates Body Temperature - Wool is a warm and breathable fabric, allowing your body to stay at a comfortable level throughout the night
  • Hypoallergenic - Wool is naturally resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew
  • Naturally Flame Retardant - Wool does not need chemically laden fire retardants sprayed on most synthetic and polyester comforters
  • Machine Washable - Wool can be washed in a cold/warm water cycle or by hand, eliminating the need for costly and harmful dry cleaning. Check out our post on How to Wash Your Wool Comforter for more.
  • Eco-Friendly Processing - Washable wool is processed with natural enzymes instead of harsh chemicals associated with traditional wool processing
  • Exquisitely Soft - Natural wool is plush and softer than traditional wool because of the gentle, eco-friendly processing that maintains the integrity of the wool fibers
